Benefits of pulses in the rotation

Pulses bring a range of agronomic benefits that strengthen whole rotations and support long-term farm performance.

  • Reduced synthetic nitrogen requirement
As nitrogen-fixing crops, pulses supply much of their own nitrogen and leave plant-available nitrogen for following crops, improving nutrient use efficiency and reducing fertiliser demand.

  • Stronger break crop effect
Used within diverse rotations, pulses help improve crop sequencing and contribute to more consistent performance across the rotation.

  • Improved soil structure and resilience
Deep rooting improves soil structure, enhances infiltration and reduces compaction, supporting trafficability and resilience during wetter seasons.

  • Support for biodiversity and beneficial insects
Flowering pulses provide forage for pollinators and beneficial insects, contributing to wider ecosystem health across the farmed landscape.

Taken together, these benefits make pulses a valuable component of productive, resilient arable rotations rather than simply an opportunistic break crop.

Benefits of Growing for BritPulse

BritPulse offers growers a dedicated and predictable market for UK-grown pulses, built around clear growing standards and long-term supply relationships.

By growing for BritPulse, you gain access to a contracted market that rewards quality, traceability and good production practices. Premiums are linked to how the crop is grown and the data supplied with it, rather than relying solely on spot market pricing.

This approach recognises the wider agronomic and environmental value pulses deliver on farm, while supporting more resilient business planning. Clear standards, known demand and transparent pricing help reduce uncertainty and allow pulses to be integrated confidently into crop rotations.

As demand for homegrown, low-emission protein increases across feed and food supply chains, growers supplying BritPulse are well placed to benefit from a more stable and better-valued pulse market.

How It Works

Grow pulses to an agreed standard
BritPulse works with growers to select a growing standard that fits their farm system. The growing standard focuses on good agronomy, crop health, soil management and the environmental value delivered by the crop.

Record simple field-level information
During the season, growers record straightforward data on variety, inputs and key field operations. This creates a clear, verifiable picture of how the crop was produced without adding unnecessary complexity.

Deliver the crop and receive a premium
Once the crop meets the agreed quality and data requirements, beans are delivered and growers receive a premium linked to the selected growing standard. This rewards good practice and supports a supply chain built on quality, transparency and data.

What Makes BritPulse Pulses Different

BritPulse pulses are not traded as a commodity. They carry added value because they come with clear standards, full traceability and verified information that downstream customers increasingly require.

Every crop supplied to BritPulse is linked back to the field it was grown in. This level of traceability provides confidence across the supply chain and allows the environmental and agronomic value delivered on farm to be recognised.

The data growers provide supports a transparent, trusted supply chain and enables BritPulse to evidence how pulses are produced and the benefits they deliver. This is what allows value to flow back to growers through more stable demand and fair premiums.

Over time, this approach supports stronger market confidence in UK-grown pulses and helps create a more resilient, better-valued pulse market for growers.

Growing Standards Under Development

BritPulse is developing a set of growing standards that will guide how pulses are produced and how value is returned to growers. These standards are designed to be practical, flexible and relevant across different farm systems.

The level of information required will vary by standard, reflecting differences in agronomy, management and customer requirements. Where needed, standards may include emissions information and verified environmental outcomes to support downstream reporting and assurance.

In 2026, BritPulse is working with a group of pilot farms in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire to test what is practical on farm and valuable to customers. This pilot phase will shape how standards are structured and how premiums are linked to the quality, traceability and information growers provide.

The final approach will support a range of farming systems and reward growers fairly for delivering quality crops, good agronomy and verified value, while keeping the process proportionate and workable in practice.
